One of the 20th century’s greatest architects celebrates his 102nd birthday today. Oscar Niemeyer is arguably Brazil’s most significant architect of the modern era, having worked at the epicenter of the South American nation’s architectural renaissance. His works include the Cathedral of Brasilia, the National Congress of Brazil, the Niterói Contemporary Art Museum and the Palácio da Alvorada, the residence of Brazil’s president. To put that in context, imagine if one architect was responsible for the White House, the United States Congress and many of our other government buildings… We salute Mr. Niemeyer on his 102nd birthday today, and wish him many more. To learn more about Oscar Niemeyer, take a look at some of his works in our feature on Brazilian Architecture.
